SUMMER ROMANCE && CLINTON WARD
HANDSOME TABBY && MAVERICK HARRIS
ADELAIDE && KALLIE SULLIVAN
DISTANCE: 5 Furlongs
PLAN: Run the first three furlongs without pushing the horses and run the last two hard.
ORDER EXPECTED: Handsome Tabby (Front/Preceder) - Summer Romance (Stalker) - Adelaide (Closer)
The scowl on Clinton's features increased as he sat in the metal gate, the horse eager but still beneath him. They were going to win this time. Too many times had the pair pulled up late in the field and after some time off, they were determined to come back stronger than before. He glanced to his left at his competition and knew they would definitely be running just behind the veteran that was Handsome Tabby. The going would be rough the first three lengths as they organized and gathered their legs beneath them. Fights over positions should not be an issue as the horses all fit into the field smoothly. From then on out, it was fair game. Clinton was hoping that Adelaide's sparse experience would cause her to misfire when it came down to running up from behind. The large chestnut stallion was a different story, however, as he would lead wire to wire. Ro would have to save energy and not push him in able to catch him in the final lengths. Or so he hoped it would be.
The gates clanged open and they surged out onto the track, their powerful legs pulling at the turf. In a few strides the horses had already established their positions and were closing in on one another. Just as he predicted, Tabs had taken the front runner position and Maverick held the pace at a slower tempo, trying to preserve energy. Clinton held Ro just off of his right flank and peeked under his arm to search for the other bay mare. There. Adelaide and Kallie pulled into the inside, off of his mount's left side, and back a length. It seems Addie had performed her usual at the starting gate and had lost some ground on the other two horses. This was fine with Clinton, as it put Summer Romance in a valuable spot and perfect for later taking on Tabs.
The three furlongs hurled by and the horses quickly started to move. Maverick showed Handsome Tabby the crop and they surged forward, determined to put distance between them and their competitors. This threw Clinton a curve ball. He was expecting to pass the pair in a few strides, but now they were going to have to chase the big stallion down. Growling, he gave a tap on Ro's shoulder and they quickened their pace. Behind them Adelaide and Kallie were keeping up and actually gaining some ground. The smaller bay mare was determined to keep up with the other two horses.
No matter what Clinton did, he could not shake Addie from Ro's flank. Being on the inside, Kallie had the advantage and boy did she know it. His strategy of chasing Tabs was quickly thrown as he was now faced with this unexpected threat beside him. Perhaps he should not have let his guard down so much with this one. He glanced up and saw the four furlong marker flash by. Only one more to go and an impossible distance had opened up between them and Handsome Tabby.
Giving up his tactic, Clinton now focused on the looming threat passing on the left side. Ro was gunning down the track but not quite fast enough. They flew past the five furlong pole and the mares were locked in, side by side. He was not entirely sure who was ahead as their heads bobbed at the same time. Either way, he was convinced they were ahead and probably would not let anyone tell him other wise. He frowned as he pulled Summer Romance up, frustrated that his plan went awry. That would surely put him in a sour mood the rest of the day. Mav returned to the rail with Tabs, as they were several lengths ahead when they crossed the wire. Clinton was in awe of the stallion. As he ages, the big chestnut just keeps getting faster and faster.
